Nearshore Development for UK Companies, Run from Casablanca

In short

Nearshore development for UK companies means a senior product team that shares your working day, not one that answers overnight. RAIN Design Studio is a senior design and development studio in Casablanca, Morocco, working remotely with UK companies: 0–1 hour from London, about three hours' flight away, on retainers from $7,500 a month.

Nearshore development for UK teams, explained

Nearshore development is outsourcing to a team in a nearby country that shares most of your working day. For a UK company, the usual shortlist covers Poland, Romania, Portugal and Ukraine. Morocco belongs on that list too, and it is often left off it.

RAIN Design Studio is a senior studio in Casablanca that works with UK companies remotely. We do not rent out developers by the head. We design and build software as a small senior team, with one lead who owns scope, quality and communication, and a human sign-off on every merge and every design. Our founder, MrZaKaRiA, spent 11 years inside agencies before starting RAIN, and the studio has shipped work since 2014.

This page is for UK teams weighing nearshore software outsourcing against UK hires, contractors or a distant offshore development team. Our nearshore development service covers the model in general. Here we focus on what matters from London, Manchester or Edinburgh.

Why Casablanca counts as nearshore for the UK

Time zone: on London time, or one hour ahead

Morocco runs on GMT+1 for most of the year and switches to GMT for roughly a month around Ramadan. The UK moves between GMT and BST. The result is a difference of 0 or 1 hour all year:

  • During British Summer Time, Casablanca and London are on the same clock.
  • In winter, Casablanca is one hour ahead, so your 9:00 stand-up is our 10:00.
  • There is no night shift and no “we’ll pick it up tomorrow” on our side.

Distance: about three hours’ flight

Direct flights from London to Casablanca take about three hours. A discovery workshop, a design sprint or a quarterly planning day is a short trip in either direction, arranged when it is worth it rather than as a standing commitment.

Language

The studio works in English and French every day, with Arabic available for interfaces and content. Specifications, pull-request reviews and Friday walkthroughs happen in English, written for your stakeholders and not translated.

What UK companies compare us against

Most UK buyers we speak to are choosing between four or five options. Here is how they compare on the points that usually decide it.

Criterion UK agency or contractors Eastern European nearshore Offshore vendor (India, South-East Asia) RAIN (Casablanca)
Time difference from London None 1–2 hours 4.5–7 hours or more 0–1 hour
Typical engagement Day rates or project fees Per-developer rate cards Per-developer rate cards, larger teams Monthly retainer or fixed scope
Who manages the work You, or the agency PM Often you, with a vendor account manager Vendor PM plus your oversight One senior RAIN lead
Design and engineering together Sometimes Usually engineering only Usually engineering only Brand, UI/UX and development in one studio
Pricing published upfront Rarely Rarely Rarely Yes: $7,500 or $15,000 a month, projects from $10,000
Best fit Permanent capability, on-site needs Larger teams of engineers High-volume, well-specified work Senior product squads that design, build and ship

No option is right for everyone. If you need twenty engineers, a larger nearshore vendor or in-house hiring will suit you better. If you need a small senior team that can start within a week and own a product from design to release, we are usually a good fit. Our guide on nearshore vs offshore development covers the trade-offs in more depth.

What a UK nearshore engagement looks like

The working rhythm is built for UK product teams that want senior output without managing a vendor:

  • One senior lead who joins your stand-ups and owns the delivery.
  • One shared Slack channel for questions and decisions, answered within your working day.
  • A Friday delivery: a working increment on a staging or preview environment, plus a Loom walkthrough you can forward to stakeholders.
  • Syncs on your rhythm: twice a week on Growth, daily on Scale.
  • Your tooling: your GitHub or GitLab organisation, your issue tracker, your cloud accounts.

A typical first fortnight

  1. Days 1–3: access, a review of your codebase or designs, and a written list of risks and quick wins.
  2. Week 1, Friday: a first small increment, so you can judge the working rhythm early.
  3. Week 2: the first real feature behind a flag, reviewed with your product owner.

What our team builds for UK clients

Our stack in 2026–2027 is TypeScript, Vue 3, React, Laravel and PHP, Tailwind CSS, Astro, Tauri for desktop, Capacitor for mobile, MySQL and PostgreSQL, and Figma for design. The evidence is in shipped work rather than slides:

  • Origin Element is the marketing site for a London AI integration consultancy. We built it in Astro 7 with 42 indexable pages, including 36 SEO and GEO content pages, build-time social cards for every page and an llms.txt generated from the site’s own data.
  • RIVER ERP is our own Laravel 13 and Vue 3 business system: 23 modules, 12 suites and 154 screens, shipped as a web app, PWA, Capacitor iOS and Android wrappers, and a Tauri desktop app.
  • Enterprise CRM is a B2B pipeline platform on React 18, a GraphQL API on NestJS 11, PostgreSQL, Redis job queues and ClickHouse for analytics.

If you are looking for a fully custom build rather than added capacity, our page on bespoke software development in the UK covers fixed-scope projects.

Contracts, data protection and IP for UK buyers

Data protection

You remain the controller under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Morocco has no UK adequacy regulations, so if personal data is transferred to us, the contract needs a safeguard, typically the ICO’s International Data Transfer Agreement (IDTA) or the UK Addendum to the EU standard contractual clauses. On our side, Moroccan Law 09-08 applies, overseen by the CNDP.

The simplest arrangement is usually the safest: we work inside your UK or EU hosting, use anonymised or synthetic data in development, and production personal data stays where it is. This is general information, not legal advice; your DPO or solicitor should confirm the setup.

Ownership and access

Intellectual property assignment, confidentiality and access are written into the contract before kick-off. Repositories, credentials and deployment pipelines can sit in your accounts from the first day, so leaving us is a matter of revoking access, not negotiating a handover.

Contracting and invoicing

You contract with a studio for agreed deliverables or retainer hours, not with individual contractors placed in your team. Prices are set in USD, and we invoice in GBP on request, with the rate agreed in the contract.

Pricing for UK nearshore development

  • Growth, $7,500 per month: 45 hours, two active projects, twice-weekly syncs, 24-hour response.
  • Scale, $15,000 per month: 100 hours, unlimited active projects, daily syncs, same-day response.
  • Fixed-scope projects from $10,000 for well-defined builds. Custom platforms such as an ERP, CRM or SaaS product typically take 8–16 weeks.

Kick-off happens within 3–5 business days of signature.

Talk to a nearshore team on your clock

If you are comparing nearshore options for a UK product team, a short call will tell you more than a capabilities deck. Book a free 15-minute call or write to rain@mrzakaria.com. Tell us what you are building, how your team is organised and when you need to ship, and we will tell you whether Growth, Scale or a fixed-scope project fits, or whether a different model would serve you better.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Morocco runs on GMT+1 for most of the year and moves to GMT for about a month around Ramadan, so Casablanca is either on London time or one hour ahead. Direct flights from London take about three hours. In practice that means shared working hours every day and in-person workshops that fit into a short trip.

Hiring offshore developers usually means renting individual engineers and managing them yourself, often across a large time difference. RAIN is a studio that takes responsibility for outcomes: one senior lead, design and engineering together, a Slack channel and a working increment every Friday. You manage priorities, not people.

You remain the controller under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Morocco has no UK adequacy regulations, so any transfer of personal data needs a safeguard such as the ICO's International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the EU standard contractual clauses. We prefer to work inside your UK or EU hosting so that production personal data never needs to leave it. This is general information, not legal advice.

Our prices are set in US dollars: Growth at $7,500 per month, Scale at $15,000 per month, and fixed-scope projects from $10,000. On request we invoice in GBP, with the rate agreed in the contract.

No. RAIN is based in Casablanca and works with UK companies remotely. Because London is only about three hours away by air, on-site discovery workshops or quarterly planning sessions can be arranged when they are worth the trip.

Your company does. Ownership and assignment of intellectual property are written into the contract before kick-off, and we can work entirely inside your GitHub or GitLab organisation and your cloud accounts from day one.
