Nearshore Software Development for US Teams: An Honest Look at Morocco

In short

Nearshore software development for US companies usually means Latin America, where teams share most of the US working day. RAIN Design Studio, a senior studio in Casablanca, Morocco, is nearshore to Europe; for US teams it is an offshore option with three to four hours of overlap with the Eastern morning, retainers from $7,500 per month and design and engineering in one team.

What nearshore means to a US buyer

When a US company searches for nearshore software development, it usually means a team in Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Brazil or Argentina: close enough to share most of the working day, with a short flight for visits. That definition is correct, and we will not stretch it.

RAIN Design Studio is a senior design and engineering studio in Casablanca, Morocco, shipping work since 2014. For European companies, Morocco is true nearshore: within an hour of London, Paris and Berlin. For US companies, we are a remote team five or six hours ahead of the East Coast. That is closer than South Asia or Eastern Europe, and further than Latin America. This page explains when that trade-off works for you and when it does not.

How Morocco compares with the usual options

Here is a fair comparison of the regions US companies most often consider. Overlap figures assume a 9:00–17:00 day on each side and US Eastern Time.

Criterion Latin America nearshore Morocco (RAIN, Casablanca) Eastern Europe South Asia
Time difference vs US Eastern About 0–2 h 5–6 h ahead About 6–7 h ahead About 9.5–10.5 h ahead
Shared hours with US Eastern Most of the day About 3–4 h, your morning About 1–2 h Little or none without shifted hours
Shared hours with Western Europe A few hours Full day Most of the day Partial
Typical model Staff augmentation and teams Senior studio, design and engineering together Mixed Large vendors and teams
Flight from New York Under 6 h to Mexico or Colombia, longer further south Direct, roughly 7–8 h Usually connecting Long-haul

Latin America wins on overlap. That is a real advantage for teams that pair all day or hold many live meetings. Morocco’s case rests on other points: one team that covers both your US mornings and a full European day, a senior studio rather than a staffing model, and design delivered by the same people who write the code.

When a Moroccan team is the right call

You sell or operate in Europe as well

If you have European customers, a London or Berlin office, or EU partners, a team in Casablanca shares their entire working day and your Eastern morning. That is useful for products that launch on both sides of the Atlantic. Our nearshore software development in Europe page explains how we work with European teams.

You are on the East Coast and run on written handoffs

Casablanca’s afternoon covers roughly 9:00 to 12:00 or 13:00 Eastern, depending on the season. Standups, planning and reviews fit in that window, and the rest of the work runs through tickets, pull requests and a Friday Loom walkthrough. Teams that already work this way rarely notice the gap.

You want a studio, not a staffing contract

Most nearshore software development companies sell developers by the head. RAIN takes responsibility for the product: one senior lead, UI/UX and engineering together, and human sign-off on every merge and design. Our dedicated development team page sets out what a retainer includes.

When to choose Latin America instead

We would rather lose a deal than win the wrong one. Choose a Latin American partner if:

  • Your engineers pair-program or hold live sessions for most of the day.
  • Your team is on Pacific time, where Casablanca is eight or nine hours ahead and overlap is limited to an early call.
  • You need ten or more full-time developers. Our retainers top out at 100 hours a month, which is a senior squad, not a large team.

What RAIN’s team builds for US companies

Our stack is TypeScript, Vue 3, React, Laravel and PHP, Tailwind CSS, Astro, Tauri for desktop, Capacitor for mobile, MySQL and PostgreSQL, and Figma. The proof is in products we run ourselves and in client work:

  • RIVER ERP: Laravel 13 and Vue 3, 23 modules and 154 screens, 1,226 commits between May and October 2026, with 965 PHPUnit test files and 381 Vitest specs. It ships as a web app, PWA, Capacitor mobile apps and a Tauri desktop app.
  • Enterprise CRM: a B2B pipeline product with a React 18 front end over GraphQL, a NestJS back end, PostgreSQL, Redis job queues and ClickHouse analytics.
  • Origin Element: an Astro 7 site for a London AI consultancy, with 42 indexable pages and Lighthouse CI on every push, which shows how we work with English-speaking clients remotely.

Questions to ask any nearshore software development company

Whether you talk to a team in Mexico City, Medellín, Kraków or Casablanca, the same questions separate good partners from expensive ones:

  1. Who exactly will work on my product, and how senior are they? Ask for the people, not the company headcount.
  2. What are the guaranteed overlap hours with my team? Get them in writing, in your time zone, for both summer and winter.
  3. Who owns the code, and where does it live? The answer should be your company, in your GitHub or GitLab organization, from day one.
  4. Who does the product and UX design? If the answer is “you”, budget for a separate designer.
  5. How will I see progress each week? Demos, staging links and pull requests are better answers than status reports.
  6. What happens if we need to scale down? Notice periods and minimum terms matter more than the headline rate.

We are happy to answer all six on a first call, and to tell you when another region would serve you better.

Contracts, data and payment

  • Contracts. A master agreement and statement of work, or your own MSA. Code and design ownership is assigned to your company, and we work inside your GitHub or GitLab organization and cloud accounts.
  • Privacy. The US has no single federal privacy law; state laws such as the CCPA may apply depending on your users. Morocco’s Law 09-08, overseen by the CNDP, governs data processing in Morocco. If EU personal data is involved, Standard Contractual Clauses are the usual transfer mechanism, since Morocco has no EU adequacy decision. This is general information; your counsel should confirm what applies.
  • Payment. Monthly invoices in USD by bank transfer.
  • Language. English day to day, with French and Arabic available.

Pricing

  • Growth, $7,500 per month: 45 hours, two active projects, twice-weekly syncs, 24-hour response.
  • Scale, $15,000 per month: 100 hours, unlimited active projects, daily syncs, same-day response.
  • Fixed-scope projects from $10,000. Custom platforms usually take 8–16 weeks.

Kick-off happens within 3–5 business days of signature. For a deeper look at the models, read nearshore vs offshore development.

Frequently asked questions

Not in the usual sense. For US buyers, nearshore normally means Latin America, which shares most of the US working day. Morocco is nearshore to Europe; for the US it is five or six hours ahead of Eastern Time, which gives three to four hours of overlap with the Eastern morning.

It makes sense when you also have European customers, staff or partners, because the same team shares the full European working day. It also fits companies on the East Coast that are comfortable with a morning overlap and written, asynchronous handoffs, and that want design and engineering from one senior studio.

If your engineers pair-program all day, your team sits on Pacific time, or you need a large team of full-time developers, a Latin American nearshore partner will usually serve you better. We say this on the first call when it applies.

RAIN publishes its prices: Growth is $7,500 per month for 45 hours, Scale is $15,000 per month for 100 hours, and fixed-scope projects start at $10,000. Vendor rate cards vary widely by country and seniority, so compare quotes on the same scope and the same seniority.

The US has no single federal privacy law, and state laws such as the CCPA may apply to your users. Morocco's own data protection law is Law 09-08, overseen by the CNDP. If you also handle EU personal data, transfers to Morocco need a mechanism such as Standard Contractual Clauses, because Morocco has no EU adequacy decision.

Yes, by arrangement. Direct flights connect Casablanca and New York in roughly seven to eight hours, and on-site workshops can be planned around a kick-off or a major release.
